The BioCompact® family includes small and medium sized affordable wastewater treatment plants ideal for small communities, First Nations, resorts, remote camps, and on ships. These systems were initially developed in the mid 1960s by a German engineering firm located in the small Westphalian town of. Salzkotten. The main application at that time was as an on-board wastewater treatment system for ships. These systems, initially certified in Germany, received international certification by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN). BioCompact® was also recognized by the US Coast Guard as a certified system. Since its introduction, more than 4,000 BioCompact® systems have been installed worldwide, the majority as on-board ship treatment systems.
In the mid 1970s, a BioCompact® version modified for use on land, received German federal certification; allowed for production and installation by qualified personnel without further engineering or certification as an individual system.
In the last ten years BioCompact® systems have been remodeled and modernized. The activated sludge BNR (biological nutrient removal) process was optimized by introducing Intelligent electronic control. The BioCompact® control systems have been upgraded to include OSCADA process visualization, and remote communication and control capabilities via secure VPN connection allowing for real time monitoring.
