Typical Wastewater Treatment Applications
- Residential Wastewater comes from several sources – toilets, baths, showers, and kitchens. Septic tanks and septic fields are probably the most common treatment options for treating residential wastewater. A biological treatment system is better and more reliable than septic tanks or fields.
- Industrial Wastewater must meet water quality regulations before it is re-used. Industrial wastewater treatment can be chemical or biological. Sometimes industrial wastewater will have a high biological oxygen demand (e.g. honey production and beer making). In these applications, the wastewater will require special treatment before discharge.
- Agricultural Wastewater is typically rich with nutrients, has a high biological oxygen demand (BOD), and high phosphate concentrations. Agricultural wastewater treatment is often complex due to the high content of nutrients and requires several treatment steps.
- Water Reuse is becoming more common as populations grow. Droughts, floods, and other catastrophic events limits water availability and renewability. Water reuse is particularly important in areas that already experience shortages in water supply. Good examples of water reuse include reusing treated wastewater for irrigation and collecting rainwater for flushing toilets. Implementing water reuse calls for modifications to water infrastructure.
